Embedding A Photo Slide Show in Drupal

Drupal editors, here is a way to embed a photo slide show into a Drupal page.  Because our district has opened up Picasa for teachers (Google's photo storage application) we now have an easy way to embed photos that autoplay when you go to the page, like these:
     https://staffdevweb.madison.k12.wi.us/node/426

Here are the instructions:

CREATE A WEB ALBUM WITH YOUR PHOTOS:
1.  Open FIREFOX and log into your district Gmail account.
2.  Open a new tab and go to https://picasaweb.google.com/homeNOTE: (If you are told to install anything, then you will have to go to the NAL and double click on "Download Picasa 3".  Follow the instructions from here.)

3.  Click UPLOAD.  You are about to create an album.
4.  Type in a name for your album.
5.  Click "SELECT PHOTOS FROM YOUR COMPUTER"
6.  Double click on the folder for your photos and select all of the photos. Click OPEN.  All of the photos will transfer over.
7.  Click OK when they're finished transferring.
8.  At the top left hand side of the webpage are three tabs called "HOME", "MY PHOTOS" and "EXPLORE". Click on HOME.
9.  Double click on the album you just created. It will show all of your new photos.
10.  On the right side-bar, click the "Click here to enter an album description
11.  Add the pertinent information in the album description.  At the bottom is a pull down menu called VISIBILITY.  Pull this down and choose LIMITED, ANYONE WITH A LINK.  Save your changes.
12. There should now be a new link on the right-hand side-bar called "LINK TO THIS ALBUM".  It's small, so look for it.  It has a chain-link icon next to it.
13. Now click "EMBED SLIDESHOW".
14.  Select the largest slideshow size.  Make sure AUTOPLAY is checked.
15.  Copy the HTML embed code and click DONE.

NOW, EMBED THIS IN A DRUPAL PAGE:

1.  Create a new Drupal page now.
2.  Go to INPUT FORMAT and change the editor type to JAVASCRIPT.
3.  Now, paste all of the code you just copied.  Do not change anything and do not add any text.
4.  Click save and revel in how awesome this looks.

Keep mind that when using student work or showing photos of students, you must adhere to the District guidelines for showing this type of information on the web. Check with your building secretary to run a list of students in IC that are not allowed to have their photographs published online.

If you run into any problems here, you are free to email me at jrwelborn@madison.k12.wi.us

Moving to a Blended Learning Model

If you're interested in moving your class to a blended learning model where there is a face to face component and an online component, consider using Moodle or another tool called Coursekit to organize your curriculum materials and promote collaboration within your classes. MMSD has a Moodle instance ready for you to use. If you would like a course shell set up for you, please contact Paula Srite. Coursekit is an online resource that is free for anyone to use.

Using Online Resources

There are several free online resources available to you and your students to use to supplement your curriculum. I'm sure by now many of you have heard of Khan Academy. Here are some others:
Mangahigh (games-based k-12 math teaching resource)
MIT Open Courseware
Purplemath
HippoCampus
OpenUW (Washington)

If you use others in your class, please share!
